Japan salary take-home calculator

Enter a monthly gross salary and see the take-home pay after social insurance and income tax — computed the way Japanese payroll actually works: prefectural health-insurance rates, standard-remuneration grades, and the National Tax Agency's monthly withholding table.

Rates: FY2026 (Kyokai Kenpo) · Withholding table: 2026 (Reiwa 8) Validated on 18/18 official worked examples

Health premiums use the Kyokai Kenpo prefectural rates for FY2026. If you belong to a union health society, enter its rate manually. Long-term care insurance is added automatically for ages 40-64.

How the calculation works

Take-home = gross − social insurance (grade-based) − income tax (monthly table) − resident tax

The detail most English calculators get wrong: social insurance is not a flat percentage of your salary. Premiums are charged on a standard monthly remuneration grade — a salary of ¥355,000 is billed as the ¥360,000 grade. Health rates also vary by prefecture (FY2026: 9.21% in Niigata to 10.55% in Saga), long-term care insurance (1.62%) applies at ages 40–64, and a child & child-rearing levy (0.23%) was added in April 2026. This calculator implements the official grade table, the official rounding rule (fractions of the employee half-share of ¥0.50 or less are truncated), and the full NTA withholding table — all 231 bands, the high-income formula bands, and the deduction for more than 7 dependents.

Take-home pay by prefecture

Health rates are set per prefecture, so the same salary nets differently across Japan. Each prefecture page shows that rate and a worked example.

Frequently asked questions

Why is resident tax not deducted by default?
Resident tax is levied on last year's income and varies widely. If you know your monthly amount, enter it and it will be reflected. You can estimate it with the resident tax calculator. In your first year of work in Japan it is zero — it starts in June of year two.
Why is Otsu-ran tax so high?
Pay without a filed withholding form (typical for a second job) is taxed under the Otsu column — about 6.6× the Ko-ran tax at ¥340,000 in Tokyo. It is settled at year-end adjustment or on your tax return.
My employer uses a health insurance society (kumiai kenpo), not Kyokai Kenpo.
Rates differ by society (major ones run about 9.0–9.5%, vs 9.21–10.55% for Kyokai Kenpo). Enter your society's rate in the manual-rate field.
Can I share a calculation?
Yes — the inputs are encoded in the URL as you type. Send the link and the recipient sees the same result.
